Teachers’training: How to teach based on concept

‘MYP: From Principal to Practice’ indicates that IB class is ‘concept based’. Teachers should teach through designing concepts. Since concepts are so important, the question of ‘what is concept’, ‘why should teachers involve concept into teaching’, and ‘how to adapt teaching methodology with global context’ come out.

On 20th September 2016, Miss Cai from Junior High Chinese department organized a training titled ‘Teaching based on concept: key concept, related concept, global context’.

ib3-6

According to MYP, there are 16 key concepts in Chinese and literature learning class, which include communication, connection, create and opinion. Miss Cai connected these 4 key concepts with 12 related concepts to guide teachers to discuss about definitions. In addition, issues such as ‘what is concept based teaching, ‘how and why to do concept based teaching’ were discussed.

At last , miss Cai showed a student’s writings in different levels of MYP, which presents students’ potential and encourages teachers to use IB concept in teaching. After the training, teachers said it helped them to understand what is key concept, related concept, global context and inquiry statement.

At the same time ‘based on the concept teaching’ is not just the demanding of MYP. Through TOK exam paper, EE modal essay and teachers’ samples, the close connection between concept and preparatory course, TOK and EE is reflected. It helps teachers to better understand the importance and manipulate of IB teaching.

Global context could provide actual context of teaching, elicit meaningful discussion in and out of class, encourage students to develop international mindness and participation. Miss Cai helped teachers to deeply understand the focus of global context, descriptions and cases through 5pictures, 2 articles and 6 exercises.
