PYP Grade 1 Classes Explore Beijing Zoo

On May 9th, three grade one PYP international classes went to the Beijing Zoo to observe animals and how they lived. This trip is also one of the most important parts of the “Sharing the Planet” unit.

First, they had a great time observing colorful marine animals and plants in the aquarium. They actively connected what they were seeing with the knowledge about the food chain they had learned in class. While seeing dolphins and huge sharks in the pool, they could not help but shout with excitement.

Next, they observed terrestrial animals and their different habits. They also had very fierce discussions like whether leopards and lynxes are felines or not. Children always have countless questions, some of which are challenging even for our professional teachers.  Their curiosity and desire to learn are very valuable when it comes to their studies.

An even more important aspect of learning that our students demonstrated is good critical thinking. For example, how to design a more suitable and comfortable habit for polar bears?  Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Our students did not want to leave the zoo, but they waved farewell to the animals. We strongly believe that when our students grow up, some of them can create better homes for these creatures using their imagination and creativity.
