PYP Exercise Time| Action Stations

What is it to play?

Playing is an opportunity for children to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

This is what I had hoped to do for Action Stations. As much as exercise needs to be for a specific purpose, it also needs to be an opportunity for children to play and have fun.

The series of Action Stations we have chosen does just this! It gives the students an opportunity to learn skills associated with their Physical Education lessons, as well as interact with friends and fellow students on a more social level.
The students follow 20 cones(stations) with a rotation of 5 different exercises. Each class moves 2 stations per exercise session. These activities work on skill, endurance and game play.

These activities may include:

  • Simple double leg plyometrics- broad jump
  • BW- ball pass on the ground
  • Jump squat
  • Throw ball into a hoop or pass to each other
  • Skipping

Students have become progressively more active in the past few weeks and I feel doing these activities not only stimulates them physically but also emotionally. Interaction between children is of utmost importance.

Teachers have also become fully immersed and have shown that they can have as much fun as the children.

I hope that in future, these activities can continue to grow and bring joy to the children every time they come outside and play.
