Our Students Are Little Scientists

Science and technology are the most important factors of a country’s growth. In BRFLS, science and technology courses have many quality lessons that the children enjoy. Today, they study scientific knowledge and learn about technology; in the future, they will contribute to the development of science and technology all over the world.

In the Lego programming course, students use the Lego WEDO simple programming package. It can be directly linked to the computer to control the equipment, tools and machinery. This is quite fun for the children. This activity not only increases their knowledge of science, but also lets them have fun creating inventions. The course helps students understand science in their lives, and how science can be used to improve the quality of life for everyone.

Since this is a practice course, videos and pictures are the best way to show students’ work in the class.
A total of 45 students selected the Lego robot course. This is a comprehensive practice course, so it has students of different ages. Therefore, the students in this class have different learning speeds and levels of understanding. Teacher Zhihong DENG uses the following techniques in order to reach all of the students.

1. Older students help younger students and faster students help slower students.
2. Ms. Deng uses competitions to evaluate the students.

Teacher Zhihong DENG graduated from Hebei Normal University. She is currently a teacher in the information technology department. Many of her students have won prizes at competitions.

There are 8 students in the 3D printing course this semester. Teacher Huang’s teaching goal is to improve the students’ sense of inquiry, problem solving skills, and critical thinking by using 3D printing software to design many items such as trains, planes, and cars.This is a unique way to think, and helps students solve problems on their own.

PowerPoint presentations show the results of the course, which includes practicing in class, learning 3D printing software and using a 3D printer to display. Children enjoy these activities in the class.

In 2016, Mr. Huang participated in the Harvard University Institute of Education “Teaching for Understanding” training. He has earned the IC3 (Internet and Computing Core Certification)certificate, as well as the Integrated Application of Computer – Global Standard certification and the Microsoft Office Software (Microsoft Office international standard MOS Specialist) Master certification.

Xiaoxuan DU and Haiying GAO teach 84 students in the scientific experiment course. In the scientific experiment course, children learn simple scientific knowledge that they can use to better understand their daily life.. Also, children learn the process and methods of scientific exploration, and how to conduct research activities.

The teachers have to be careful when planning experiments for the class. If the experiment is too simple, it will not be engaging to the students. If it is too difficult, it will discourage them. The teachers use competitions to interest the students, who all enjoy the course.

XiaoXuan DU and HaiYing GAO are the teachers of the scientific experiment course. They are wonderful teachers.
