BRFLS Foreign Teachers Uses IPads In Today’s Classroom

Today’s modern society technology plays a more significant role in our lives than ever before.  We are constantly surrounded by new technological devices and innovations that make our lives easier and more convenient.  The students in our classes today are part of a technology-driven society and culture and have grown up with this technology in their hands from a young age.  It almost seems unimaginable for teenagers and young adults to communicate and exchange ideas without using technology in some way.  The plethora of devices competing with the computer, from smartphones to tablets, just to name a few, has provided students with the ability to communicate and get information with unprecedented accessibility and speed.  It is then only natural for education to follow this global trend.  At RFLS we are always incorporating some form of technology into the students daily lessons.  We are lucky enough to have access to the latest iPads to use in our classrooms.

This week the grade four learners were able to use these iPads to complete a research assignment on Endangered Animals during their English lessons.  The teacher gave the students some guidance with instructional questions and a format of what he wanted them to achieve.  The students were then able to use the iPads to gather the information and get creative with various pictures.    The students were encouraged to complete their searches in English, this way developing their skills as well as creativity.  Once the students choose the animals they wanted to research, they could then use the iPads to find out information about the animals habitat, food, reasons for becoming endangered as well as an up to date count or estimate on how many of these animals are still alive in the world today.  The students were also encouraged to find out if there are any ways they could make a difference to help the animal species.  All of these ideas and information was then displayed on a poster and once they have completed this, the students will have the opportunity to present their selected animals to the rest of their peers.  Since this is done during their English lessons, the learners will complete the writing component as well as the presentation in English.
