Introduction to Beijing Royal School

BRS: Pioneering Excellence in International Education

Since its founding in 1996, Beijing Royal School (BRS) has been at the forefront of international education in China. From 2003 to 2006, BRS made history as the first school in China to introduce A-Level, AS, and IGCSE curricula, establishing Beijing’s inaugural Cambridge International Centre. Concurrently, BRS launched a full Advanced Placement (AP) program, earning distinction as the only College Board AP Demonstration School in China.

In January 2018, BRS was authorized as an IB World School by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Building on this legacy, BRS achieved another milestone in October 2023 by becoming the first international school in the world to receive dual accreditation from both WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and NEASC/CIPSH (New England Association of Schools & Colleges/Commission on International and Private Schools).

Curricula

BRS offers a comprehensive international curriculum, including AP, A Level, IB and the OSSD Program. 34 AP and 19 A Level courses challenge students intellectually and enable them to identify and pursue individual interests and goals. Over many years, our ability-based teaching system has provided a framework for accommodating diverse needs and helped every student fully realize his or her academic potentials.

Teaching

At the heart of quality education are talented and dedicated teachers. Beijing Royal School possesses a highly qualified faculty with the education and experience required to prepare students for international college entrance examinations and, more importantly, to excel at the world’s most outstanding universities. Approximately 40 percent of BRS’s diverse faculty are foreign born and educated, and another 40 percent possess overseas university degrees and experience, while the remaining 20 percent are Chinese teachers proficient in English.

BRS provides teachers with continuing education training programs, sends teachers to domestic and international academic conferences, and encourages and sponsors teachers to further their education abroad. Among 150 teachers who have completed the WIDE World program offered by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, 17 have been certified as coaches. 7 teachers have received M.A. degrees from the University of NC, Chapel Hill and another 26 teachers have received M.A. degrees from NC State University. One teacher is currently finishing her master’s program at Columbia University. Every year, more than 200 teachers attend academic conferences and training inside and outside of China.

International Cooperation

BRS has built partnerships with many internationally influential academic organizations and institutions, including UN Women, UNESCO, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Oxford Entrepreneurs Association, Harvard Medical School, Duke University, and many others. These partnerships open channels for BRS students to participate in nearly 100 academic competitions and other activities in 10 subject areas.
