On September 24-25, 2021, BRS and Fazheng International Education hosted the Experimental Area Curriculum Leadership Improvement Seminar titled “Leading Principals (Directors) Growth Project” on BRS campus. The seminar was organized by the Institute for Curriculum and Textbook (National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development, Ministry of Education). It is designed to build a high-quality education system in the experimental area by encouraging in-depth exchange of learning outcomes and increasing levels of curriculum leadership by principals and kindergarten directors.
Gu Mingyuan, Honorary President of the Chinese Society of Education and professor of Beijing Normal University; Yang Yinfu, Secretary General of the Secretariat of the Chinese Society of Education; Zhang Guohua, Deputy Director of the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development; Wang Yang, Director of the Education Research Office of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Head of the Training Base (Shanghai); BRS Chief Principal Wang Guangfa, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Also in attendance were principals from 20 experimental areas. Chen Yunlong, Deputy Director of the Institute for Curriculum and Textbook and the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development, presided over the opening ceremony.
BRS Principal Wang Guangfa welcomed all the leaders, principals and experts to the event and to BRS’s beautiful, international campus. He stated his hope that this seminar will enhance the curriculum leadership of principals and promote the implementation of new curriculum and new teaching materials in the experimental areas; thus, further contributing to the curriculum reform of basic education in China.
Zhang Guohua said in his speech that the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee clearly proposed building a strong education country by 2035, and the 14th Five-Year Plan proposed building a high-quality education system. To achieve such a strategic goal, curriculum is the core and principal is the key. He also proposed that for building a high-quality education system, the first thing is to fully implement the Party’s education policy; then, the key is to comprehensively deepen curriculum reform; and, finally, to strengthen the roots of every school through increased involvement by principals and teachers.
Gu Mingyuan focused on explaining the nature and values of education. He believes that the essence of education can be summarized from the perspective of life: improve the quality of life and enhance the value of life. And the values of education are very diversified; but, throughout China’s five thousand years as a nation, the one mainstream educational value of collectivism has always existed.
Zhai Bo, President of China Education Press Agency, shared a keynote report entitled “Evolution of the Party’s Education Policy and Brilliance of Its Ideology”.
During the parallel sessions, participants from all levels (kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school) exchanged views, based upon their learning outcomes, regarding overall development of schools and the enhancement of curriculum leadership.
