There are fifty-six ethnic groups in China and we are a big family who share different cultures. So on March 23rd, the Grade 1 students from the PYP department and the K1 International Class visited the China Ethnic Minority Museum together to start their first exploratory trip of this semester.

The current UOI for Grade 1 is “Where we are in place and time” and our lines of inquiry are “Diversity of families”, “Traditions & celebrations shared within families”. During our inquiry, students learned about Chinese Ethnic Minorities including their festivals and customs. The field trip gave them an opportunity to experience the lives of Chinese Ethnic Minorities first hand.
The first thing that caught the students’ eyes was a beautiful Manfeilong Waterfall and the sound of the water was so refreshing. There were various buildingsand houses covered by layers of green bamboo, which was so beautiful. The students first visited the traditional “L-shaped” Hedge Building of the Salars and the Minaret & Mosque. They also discovered the crops planted in the courtyard.

Crossing the stone bridge, the students entered the Dai Village. They visited the “Manfeilong Pagoda”, “Elephant Pagoda Well” and the gorgeous “Octagonal Pavilion”. After the snack break, the students gathered at the Songkran Plaza, and then they happily danced the “Bamboo Pole Dance” under the guidance of the teachers, accompanied by the melodious “Phoenix under the Moonlight”. The plaza was filled with laughter and joy.

After leaving the Dai Village, the students walked along the winding paths to visit some ethnic minority buildings from Taiwan. They stopped to experience the different scenes of the ethnic minority compatriots in gatherings & discussions and then appreciated their unique architectural style. The students thoughtfully asked the teacher: “Why is there a well under their house?”; “What pattern is painted on the wood?” etc.

The students also saw ethnic buildings from Jingpo group, Qiang group, and Tibetans’ group. When they walked along the stone steps on pilgrimage roads, they walked very carefully. Curiosity about unknown things were full of their little heads.

After returning to the school, the students used their pencils or markers to record what they saw during their field trip. They observed beauty, discovered beauty, and recorded beauty.

Hope this trip to the China Ethnic Minority Museum can help the students understand better about various ethnic cultures and stimulated their thinking about the diverse architecture & the unique lifestyles of ethnic minorities. May a single spark can start a prairie fire.
