On May 12, PYP Grade 5 students visited the Office of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for China.

The staff of the organization  prepared three speeches and one round table discussion session for the children.

At the beginning of the visit, the Deputy Representative of UNICEF China, Dr. Douglas Noble, gave a welcome speech to the children. He hoped that the children would gain something during their short visit and take this opportunity to pay more attention to the problems faced by children and their rights.

What are the biggest problems we are facing in our communities, countries and the world? It was Mr. zhang Junye, the first teacher, who raised this question. Children need to imagine if they were national leaders and how they would make plans of action when faced with these problems.

Ms. Wang Xu, the second teacher of the lecture, shared with the children several important topics of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is an initiative launched by the United Nations in 2015, with 17 major goals and more than 100 targets. From 17 goals, Ms. Wang Xu selected topics closely related to children’s lives for sharing and discussion. They are the allocation of educational resources, clean water and environmental sanitation, human health and disease, road safety and so on.

Ms. Wang also shared information about the World Food Program(WFP) with the children. Nowadays, the problem of hunger in China has been solved very well. The average height of children is higher than before, but then there is the problem of child overweight and obesity. With the progress and development of society, the problems in each stage will change.

“The Sustainable Development Goals are very macro, but they are closely related to each of us every day. Maybe we are still children, but our strength is not small. We can save water, use less electricity and so on .” Ms. Wang said.

The last teacher who gave a group lecture to the children was Mr. Li Shenrui. He brought the topic of children’s rights and interests to the children, focusing on the four types of basic rights enjoyed by children according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: the right to survival, the right to development, the right to protection and the right to participation.

The teacher prepared five cases related to children’s rights, and the children were divided into five groups for discussion. According to different cases, the group members analyzed what rights and interests of the children in the case were violated.

In the round table discussion session, teachers Ms. Yang Han, Mr. Li Shenrui, Mr. Bi chongjun,Ms. Ni Shan and Mr. Li Nan from UNICEF China discussed with different groups of students on five themes: Child-Friendly City Initiative, violence against children, child overweight and obesity, early childhood development and adolescen mental health.

We would like to thank the United Nations Children’s Fund for this opportunity to visit. We hope our children today will grow up to be advocates for children’s rights.

At the same time, the graduation exhibition of PYP grade 5 is just around the corner, and the problems that children are facing according to UNICEF

are related to some topics of the children’s graduation exhibition. I hope that this visit can provide more action plan ideas for the children’s graduation exhibition.
