Generation IB: highlighting the collective impact that we all make through the IB

The purpose of a conference like this is unite with colleagues from 40 different countries who are working towards the same goal so that we can meet, engage, learn and share experiences. It also gives us a chance to be inspired, feel confused, have concerns moderated and seek clarification. The other very valuable aspect is that we can find out about some excellent companies that support the delivery of our education through resourcing, both physically and technologically.

We arrived in Hong Kong and enjoyed the warmer but damper air – a change is always a positive!! After registration, and throughout the following days, we were entertained by some local talent from IB schools to launch the Conference; drumming, dancing, a very engaging and graceful harp player and a charming choir that warmed our hearts with an enthusiastic rendition of Tim Minchin’s, “When I grow up” – must for our 2019 PYP Choir!!

On a more serious note, we had the pleasure of listening to a range of plenary speakers that created chills, made us tear up, invited curiosity and shocked us with statistics. We were indeed pushed from considering the daily life at school to thinking about the future for the children in our classrooms. As we move into an era of artificial intelligence, we stop and wonder, how can we prepare our babes for this new, unknown lifestyle. One of the most significant factors that impacted me was that in this new world, creative thinking, problem solving and leadership will be in greater demand.

The skills we will need to have a greater focus on can be seen on the photo below:

Jack Ma, Executive Chair Alibaba Group says, “If we do not change the way we teach, we will be in trouble in 30 years. We have to change to teach something unique that machines cannot catch up with so that in 30 years our kids will have a chance.” (2018)

Without a doubt, the future is unknown, however, we would be foolish to just throw in the towel! The definition of future-ready learning is an education that develops transformative competencies to empower students for an uncertain future and enable them to believe they can make the world a better place.

One of the final speakers shared stories of how he has encouraged students to take action – it was not about being charitable, but actually being empathetic. He posed 3 simple questions that I think we should all ask ourselves: Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?

Each of the 3 days also had Breakout sessions where a range of topics were offered for leadership, cross program topics, PYP specific topics, authorization processes, program updates as well as companies sharing their technology platforms, assessment programs, and what to consider when furnishing a learning space!!! Ying and I made sure that between the two of us, we gathered information, made valuable contacts and asked for some suggestions from colleagues with greater experience.

Needless to say, we are exhausted.

We thank the School Administration Office sincerely for allowing us to attend the conference; it was a great opportunity and it allowed us to some professional learning of our own!
