Bringing Sunlight to the Sun Village │
This Wednesday, Classes 4.1 and 4.2 spent their morning at the local Sun Village Orphanage. The Sun Village organisation works to provide a safe and comfortable environment for children in need.

Upon our arrival, students presented donations that they collected or purchased. Earlier in the unit, students explored the Sun Village website to find a list of items that the orphanage needs. Many students and their families took this opportunity to collect items and share the caring spirit.

At Sun Village, our students watched two videos featuring the history and origin of the organisation, as well as information about its founder, Zhang Shuqin. After the video, the students were able to sit with the Sun Village staff and ask them questions.

Our classes then explored the grounds of Sun Village in order to gain perspective on how the children live. The staff led students on a walking tour that included the cafeteria, dorms, and playground. Students were able to see how the organisations is set up to offer the children a “sunny” life.

Sun Village operates a Charity Garden, and it is one of the ways in which the organisation raises funds to support itself. Donors can pay a fee to purchase a box of fruit or pick it directly from their gardens. Grade 4 collected class money to purchase a box of strawberries for each student. Students were able to visit the garden and pick the ripe, delicious strawberries themselves.

This field trip was arranged to align with our current unit: Sharing the Planet. Our central idea is:

Children worldwide encounter a range of challenges, risks, and opportunities.

Our first line of inquiry deals with thechallenges that children encounter both locally and globally. Our second line addresses how children respond to challenges, risks, and opportunities. The third line focuses onhow organisations and individuals work to protect children from risk. From this field trip, students were able to see the first and third lines in a local perspective.

Upon our return to the classroom, students were asked to reflect on our field trip experience. These are just a few excerpts from their written reflections:

“Today we went to Sun Village. I think it was a big challenge for the children there. Their parents are in the jail. I wonder why. I wish they will have a good life.” – Victoria, 4.1

“I think Sun Village is so great! It is a pity that we didn’t see the children. The children have a big challenge, it’s not to be sad when the police take their parents and let them be alone. They have pain and no hope.” – Linda, 4.1

“I think Sunvillage is good to help children overcome many risks and challenges.  Children there can afford basic needs, they will have less danger in their lives, and they won’t be so lonely.  I think this organisation is powerful.”  – Olivia, 4.2

“Today my classmates and I went to an orphanage called Sunvillage.  It’s not as nice as a home.  These children don’t have parents and I feel bad for them.  I feel lucky because I have a nice home and parents that love me.  I think we should help them more.  We can help them by giving donations to Sunvillage.  Adults can give money and kids can give toys and books.”  – Danny Sun, 4.2

“I think Sunvillage is good because they help some parents and their children.  Maybe they are sad but Sunvillage still lets kids be happy and go to school, amazing!  If I can help them I think I will give them my own money and let them buy what they need.”  – Nancy, 4.2

“Today we went to Sunvillage.  I felt very lonely because I thought about my parents.  The people who work at Sunvillage work to help these children overcome their risks and challenges.  We can help them and give them food, books, or toys.”  – Peggy, 4.2

It is our hope that students walk away from this experience with a bigger and kinder perspective. We want them to understand that not all children are blessed with good fortune, but that there are organisations and people out there who are willing to help make the world safer – and that we can be those people.
